Physics Division, Centre for Foundation Studies in Science of Universiti Putra Malaysia Conducts Science and Mathematics Program 2024
August 21, 2024 – The Physics Division of the Centre for Foundation Studies in Science of Universiti Putra Malaysia (AsPutra) successfully organized the Science and Mathematics Program 2024 at SMK Dengkil, Selangor. The program held on August 21, 2024, involved seven educators, including lecturers and teachers from the Physics Division, led by Dr. Ikhwan Syafiq bin Mohd Noor. A total of 80 Form Three students and two teachers from the school participated in the program.
The main objective of the Science and Mathematics Program 2024 was to inspire and cultivate students' interest in science and mathematics through activity-based learning. Seven interactive activities were conducted, including hologram, balloon pop, lemon battery, laser maze, projectile, electric bell, and floating metal. These activities were designed to link theoretical concepts of science and mathematics with practical situations, thereby helping students understand and appreciate the importance of these subjects in everyday life.
The program also aimed to stimulate students' critical thinking and raise their awareness of the importance of science and mathematics in problem-solving. Through activity-based learning, the program successfully fostered higher-order thinking skills among students, deepening their understanding of scientific concepts and preparing them to face future technological challenges.
The introduction to the integrated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field aligns with the educational policies outlined in the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 (PPPM 2013-2025). AsPutra played an active role in supporting this initiative by providing activities that promote STEM learning at the school level.
The Science and Mathematics Program 2024 had a positive impact on students, increasing their interest and motivation to pursue careers in science. This is in line with 21st-century learning concepts, which emphasize the 4C components—Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Critical Thinking—as well as higher-order thinking skills (KBAT).
The strong reception from the school highlights the effectiveness of this program and suggests that the Science and Mathematics Program 2024 should be continued in the future. Schools or institutions interested in organizing similar programs are encouraged to contact AsPutra for more information.
