Group research participated by Dr. Norazlinaliza Salim has won the silver medal in the International Conference and Exposition on Inventions by Institutions of Higher Learning (PECIPTA) 2022. The invention is a plant-based nanoemulsion solution, a novel non-toxic germicide agent against pathogenic bacteria including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Acinetobacter baumannii, which is a common threat to public health but with limited therapeutic options. The formulation is also effective in killing viruses including human coronavirus OC43 (hCoV-OC43) in vitro which is a beta coronavirus under the same group as the SARS-CoV-2.

The product is suitable to be used as a surface decontaminant in hospitals, and health care services even as a household cleaning agent. The alcohol-free and antioxidant properties of the solution give minimum toxicity, safer for the skin. The lemon-scented product deodorizes the treated area or skin and leaves it fresh, clean, and bright. This novel and a natural formulation containing terpenes as an active ingredient offer greater safety as a sustainable alternative, effective and lower production cost which has a high chance of turning into profitable business products.
