Malaysia Asasi Games 2020 or Sukan Asasi Malaysia (SAM2020), took place from January 16th to January 19th 2020. UPM contingent bagged a total of 17 medals (6 gold, 8 silver and 3 bronze medals) throughout the games and was ranked second out of 13 foundation centres competed in the tournament.  Apart from the medals collected in the athletics events, a gold and a bronze medal were collected from the Esports event (FIFA19), 2 silver medals from the Carom (men and women) event, 1 silver medal from the badminton event (female doubles) and another 1 bronze medal was won in the badminton event (singles).

The organisation of the Malaysia Asasi Games 2020 (formerly known as the International Inter-Asasi Games) was a result of the consensus established by the Dean/Directors Council of Public University. SAM2020 was the games’ third edition which involved all public foundation studies centres in Malaysia, namely  Asasi UiTM, AsasiPINTAR Programme, Asasi UPNM, Asasi UMS, ASPer UPM, Asasi Sabah (UMS), Asasi UniSZA , Asasi IIUM, Asasi UUM, Asasi Unimas, Asasi USIM, Asasi UMT and the Matriculation Division. The organiser of this year’s games was Unimas Centre of Pre-University Studies (PPPU) and Unimas Sports Centre in collaboration with Unimas Global.

UPM contingent consisted of 23 athletes who were also the students of the ASPer, session 2019/2020. The athletes joined 4 out of the 7 events contested, namely Athletics, Badminton, Carom and Esports (FIFA19). The contingent was led by Prof. Madya Dr. Norfifah Bachok, Deputy Director II (Student Affairs & JinM) and also assisted by Pn. Che Zailawati Abdul Ghani as the contingent coordinator. The success was a result of a solid commitment from all athletes who had attended a training session organised by Pn. Hasniah, the contingent coaching coordinator as well as the commitment of all the team managers, En. Muhammad Amirul Faez Sulaiman, En. Mohd. Fadzil Suhaimi, En. Adi Fadzli @ Izwan Che Rosele and En. Mohd. Yazid Mukhtar. A huge thanks goes to Hj. Amran Zakaria who constantly uplifted the athletes’ spirit throughout the tournament as well as two helpful contingent secretaries, namely Pn. Shariena @ Amierah Razali and Pn. Hafizah Meor Abdullah.

Prof Norihan Md. Arifin, the director of Centre of Foundation Studies for Agricultural Science, also provided support to the contingent during the tournament and she was immensely proud of the achievement of the UPM contingent in SAM2020. Undoubtedly, SAM2020 managed to produce new UPM athletes for other sports tournaments.

Acknowledgement was also given to the UPM Sports Center who helped in terms of advisory services in sports management and athlete training sessions for SAM2020 especially to the Director of Sports Center, Dr. Hanafiah Ayub and Head of Sport Excellence Section En. Mohamad Malik Ahmad Tobias.

Congratulations UPM contingent. ASPer shares this success with all UPM citizens!
