On the 21st of October 2019, Science and Maths Smart Program was held at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Taman Bunga Raya (1), Bukit Beruntung, Rawang, Selangor. This program was a collaboration of Centre of Foundation Studies for Agricultural Science (PASP), District Educational Office (PPD) Hulu Selangor and SMK Taman Bunga Raya (1).
The aim of this program was to enhance the students’ critical thinking skills as well as to create awareness of science and mathematics usage in solving problems. In addition to that, the program aimed to improve better perception of the students in appreciating science and mathematics subjects along with increasing the students’ understanding of science and mathematics questions with high order thinking skills (HOTS).
Over 160 form 3 students attended this program. A total of 10 STEM projects involving mathematics, physics and chemistry subjects were conducted by 25 facilitators which consisted of 7 lecturers, 6 education service officers, 3 postgraduate students, 3 undergraduate students and 6 students of PASP.
The program was also attended by a top PPD Hulu Selangor, En. Abu Mansor bin Sathri who also participated in the activities and engaged with the students during the program. Meanwhile, Associate Professor Dr Norfifah binti Bachok@Lati represented PASP to sign a memorandum of understanding with PPD Hulu Selangor.
This Science and Maths Smart Program 2019 was a continuation of the same program in the previous year which was conducted at SMK Kampung Soeharto. The participation of the students this time increased to 100% compared to last year. Students were also exposed to the use of computers in science learning through simulation of virtual lab AsperLabs.
Generally, the program was a smooth-sailing and received good feedbacks from the students. PPD and PASP officers are targeting the involvement of more than one school and more number of students to participate for next year.
